The workshops in operation
The master glassmaker The fused material is collected at the end of a hollow
rod. The glass-blower blows air down, little by little, through the rod.
When the air comes in contact with the hot glass it expands and the ball of
crystal grows. To keep the ball in spherical form, the glass blower
maintains a constant rotation on the rod. The final shape will be obtained
by blowing in a mould.
The cutter
The guidelines help the cutter to form the basic shape. The cutting and
trimming are done with a diamond grinding wheel spinning at high speed.
The art of the engraver Some
pieces will be engraved, using either a wheel or a jet of sand. Whether for
true decoration or simply for personalisation, engraving requires the right
technique, precision and dexterity, which can only be acquired through
experience built on innate artistic ability.
The polisher
Cutting out has made the pieces mat, so they need to be polished to give
them sparkle and brilliance. The items are polished by hand on large felt buffing wheels, over which
flows a mixture of water and abrasive.
Special decoration
After engraving, some pieces will be gilded with pure gold (24 carat). Using
a very fine brush, the artist will apply the decoration in gold or platinum
with remarkable precision. The gilding will then be polished to give it
brilliance and sparkle.
The showroom
Everything we produce at Val Saint-Lambert is on display here …you'll be
spoilt for choice!
Some Challenges
These men and women use their talent and experience to produce more than
1000 different items. We often make unique and exceptional items that are
not available through our catalogue and are virtually impossible to recreate…
Here is one of the
80 seats created by the architect Frans Van Praet for the Belgian pavilion
at the Seville world exhibition of 1992. The stool is red, is made of double
cut crystal, and even has its own air conditioning system!
This vase depicts
the 9 provinces that made up Belgium until 1960. It is made of 60 pieces
engraved with the arms of the provinces, and weighs 180 kg. This monumental
work was made of clear crystal for the Antwerp World Exhibition in 1894. It
represents over 2,000 hours' work.
The Crystal Chateau
brings to life a chateau that figured in the legends of the famous Han Caves
(in Belgium), illustrated by Paul Geerts in a comic strip album entitled "The
Crystal Chateau". A unique piece, it has been exhibited in the Han Caves and
has been seen by over 500,000 visitors. More recently it has been displayed
in New York and Frankfort for clients of Val Saint-Lambert.
Numerous artists
from countries all round the world are attracted to Val Saint-Lambert. Each
one brings fresh ideas, a new inspiration that changes with the generations.
Thus we have Philippe Starck, Robin Winters, Leo Copers, Martin Szekely,
Borek Sipek, Katharine de Sousa who add their talent to that of our resident
artists and designers.
